Flight Computers

A flight computer is a classic pilot’s tool, often referred to by names such as the E6B, CR, CRP-5, or “Whizz Wheel.” Despite being designed decades ago, these analog devices remain an essential part of flight training and are still carried by many professional pilots. While digital flight computers are available and popular for their convenience, most aviation training organisations require students to use the traditional analog style during instruction and exams.

Flight computers are invaluable for both pre-flight planning and in-flight calculations. On the ground, they help work out fuel consumption, wind correction, estimated time en route, and other planning tasks. In the air, they can quickly provide updates on ground speed, revised fuel burn, and estimated arrival time.

One of the most practical features of the E6B is its ability to calculate time, speed, and distance. By aligning the 60-minute mark with the aircraft’s airspeed, a pilot can instantly read how far the aircraft will travel in any given number of minutes, or work backwards to determine the time required to cover a specific distance.

The reverse side of the flight computer is designed for wind correction calculations. This allows pilots to determine how wind direction and strength affect their speed and track, and to find the necessary crosswind correction angle. Built-in rulers for statute and nautical miles also assist with chart work and navigation.

Another handy feature is the conversion scales, which make it easy to switch between units such as Fahrenheit and Celsius.

Simple, durable, and reliable, flight computers remain an essential tool for pilots — particularly students — who want to strengthen their understanding of navigation and flight planning fundamentals.
