Product Info

This drill stop fits #30 drill bits (0.1285" / 3.26 mm), the standard drill for 1/8" rivets and 1/8" clecos. If you only buy one drill stop, make it this one: #30 is the hole you drill more of than any other on an aluminium airframe. The copper spring matches the colour of our 1/8" C Series clecos.

A drill stop is a spring loaded depth stop that locks onto the shank of the bit with a hex socket set screw. Only the length of drill you leave exposed can enter the work, so the bit cannot go any deeper than you set it. As you reach depth, the rounded steel nose settles on the panel and the coil spring takes the lunge out of the breakthrough, instead of letting the chuck slam into the skin.

When you are drilling a few hundred #30 holes in a session, the stop pays for itself the first time it keeps the chuck off a freshly primed skin, or stops the bit short of a cable run, a wiring loom or the far side of a tank. It also takes the snatch out of the breakthrough that breaks bits and leaves ragged holes.

How to Use

  1. Fit the stop: slide it onto the drill bit from the shank end, rounded nose towards the tip and set screw collar towards the chuck.
  2. Set the depth: hold the nose pushed back so the spring is fully compressed, then position the collar so the bit stands proud of the nose by the thickness of your stack plus a few millimetres for the drill point.
  3. Lock it: tighten the set screw with a small hex key (not included) and let the nose go.
  4. Drill as normal: when the nose touches the surface the spring starts to compress, and when it bottoms out the bit can go no deeper.
