Product Info

The largest drill stop in the range fits 5/16" drill bits (0.3125" / 7.94 mm), the drill for AN5 bolt holes, 5/16" hardware and bushings. The spring is copper, and at about 60 mm long it wants a jobber length bit rather than a stubby.

A drill stop is a spring loaded depth stop that locks onto the shank of the bit with a hex socket set screw. Only the length of drill you leave exposed can enter the work, so the bit cannot go any deeper than you set it. As you reach depth, the rounded steel nose settles on the panel and the coil spring takes the lunge out of the breakthrough, instead of letting the chuck slam into the skin.

Big bits on big drills give the hardest breakthrough of all, and a chuck landing on a panel at 5/16" leaves a mark you will not polish out. The stop puts a hard limit on depth so the bit stops where you set it, and the spring absorbs the breakthrough so the chuck never touches the work. Worth having on any bolt hole where the far side is a line, a tank or a finished surface.

How to Use

  1. Fit the stop: slide it onto the drill bit from the shank end, rounded nose towards the tip and set screw collar towards the chuck.
  2. Set the depth: hold the nose pushed back so the spring is fully compressed, then position the collar so the bit stands proud of the nose by the thickness of your stack plus a few millimetres for the drill point.
  3. Lock it: tighten the set screw with a small hex key (not included) and let the nose go.
  4. Drill as normal: when the nose touches the surface the spring starts to compress, and when it bottoms out the bit can go no deeper.
